Some frequently asked questions about helmets

  1. What is the shelf life of a helmet and what is the expiry date? - According to the Singapore SS 98 standard for industrial safety helmet specification, there is no manditory expiry date. Instead, representative samples from each batch of hats can be tested every 3 years (from the date of first use) to ensure each batch's compliance with SS 98.
  2. But what if the date wheel on my helmet shows that the helmet is more than 3 years old? - The date wheel found on your helmet indicates the date of manufacture. Manufacturers usually recommend a maximum storage period of 5 years before first use.
  3. When should I replace my helmet? - Helmets must be inspected before each use. Discolouration of the shell colour, loss of gloss and/or weathering of the surface such as chalking and flaking may indicate a loss of strength. Helmets showing these signs must be changed regardless of age.
The helmet must also be changed if it has suffered any significant impact regardless of signs of damage.
  4. What can I do to lengthen my helmet's shelf life - Clean the helmet regularly shell with warm water and mild detergent. Manufacturer approved solvents can be used to remove tar, paints, oils and other substances that are hard to remove. Cleaning must be done with the harnesses / suspensions removed.
  5. Are there any parts that are mandatory to replace? - SS 98 requires helmet harnesses / suspensions to be changed every 2 years from the start of use. You can replace them to lengthen the service life of the helmet.
  6. Why is brand X more expensive than brand Y if they are both SS 98 approved?  - Yes, part of the price difference will be branding, but that's not all. Features such as ratcheted suspensions, different shell materials, suspension design, etc. will contribute to the overall cost. 1 important difference is the tests done for quality control and consistency. These tests assure that every batch produced meets or surpases the safety requirements. Just because 1 batch meets the standard doesn't automatically mean the next ones will.
